We all the more the surface area the greater is the friction. Hence a tire with no treads will have greater surface area(in contact with the road) as compared to the one with treads.. hence better grip. But, when there is water on the road the tread less tire 'll lose grip tremendously due to buoyancy effect of the water. The treads of the tires help removing water from between the tire & the road. For this reason you 'll see in F1 and in Moto GP racers use sleek(tread less) tires in dry conditions while tires with tread in wet conditions. And one more thing, the treads are good enough till the point where the height of water on the road is less than the depth of the treads on the tires. Happy Driving.
